Reflecting on the Week- 7th Graders

I really liked today. it was the best last day. I really liked the ice cream stuff.

I liked when we went on Major Tools tour and I liked when we made ice cream.

I have fun but today is the last day of camp but I am not going to cry it was fun at this camp and everyone was my favorite counselor! I will miss you guys!

Today, I like when we went to Major Tool & Machine.

I liked eating all the different foods!

I liked playing dodge ball.

Today was culture day we learned about different countries like mexico and tried different foods from different cultures.

It was a very good day and sadly it ended but I will remember this camp forever!

Fifth Day- 7th Graders

Today was a culture day for the 7th Graders! We wanted to emphasize the importance of where our families come from. We learned about the culture, history, and food of four separate countries. We started with Aster talking about Ethiopia. She was born and raised there, and moved to the United States when she was about to go to college. Although she's lived in the United States for almost 40 years now, she still remembers her heritage and goes back to Ethiopia as much as she can! She brought native clothing, instruments, and even an Ethiopian flyswatter! She also made a traditional Ethiopian meal with chicken and lentils. While the kids were skeptical at first they soon embraced the different food.

The campers got the opportunity to tour Major Tool & Machine, they were walked around most of the plant including where some of the parts were made! Our tour guide told us the importance of each part of the plant  and what each of the part was created for. We also got to see another larger 3D printer that was printing off the rockets the kids had designed earlier this week.

After the tour, Jenna talked about France. She recently got back from a trip to Paris and Normandy with her school. After teaching the kids some basic french words, she went through some of her favorite parts of her trip as well as the food, monuments, and history of France. The kids enjoyed learning about the famous monuments/landmarks and thee lesson was ended with Nutella crepes!

Lunch was next! We had hamburgers and hotdogs, along with Mac&Cheese and Salads. Right after Abbie showed the kids how to make homemade ice cream, and they each made their own bag!

Abbie then talked about Mexico! She started teaching them some basic Spanish words and moved onto Mexican history, native food and traditions. She also played some of the most popular Spanish songs in Mexico! To give them a taste of Mexico Abbie made Sopapilla! They are like the Spanish version of elephant ears except with cinnamon instead of powdered sugar!

We ended  the day with reflection and the counselors said goodbye to the seventh graders! We had a very successful week filled with learning, fun and food!

Fourth Day- 7th Graders

IUPUI came today to go over the importance of soil! They spend about half of the day here and throughout their time the incorporated games, learning, and experiments! We started off with creating our own soil profiles (models of the layers in soil)! This showed how every area of soil can be different depending on it's bedrock, climate, and proximity to water. After going over the levels we planted flowers into our profiles so that we can take them home and examine how roots effect each soil level. After this we collected cores from the soil surrounding the center and discovered how thick the top layer of soil was! With these samples we soon tested to see how much phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen was in the soil! We got to finish color charts that helped us determine what kind of soil surrounded the Center! The campers learned about the experimental process as well as learned how to work handheld soil testing mechanisms which showed us the moisture content, pH, and temperature.

For lunch we had chicken tenders, mac & cheese and salad!

After lunch Nurse Kathy taught the campers basic first aid! Including taking blood pressure, heart rate, and how to clean wounds. They also made no bake cookies!

Next Abbie put the kids through a difficult obstacle course where they had to do things like jump through hula-hoops, do a baseball bat spin, bean bag throw, jumping jacks and hurdles! Though sometimes difficult many of the kids found finishing the course very rewarding.

Then Aster taught the kids about the parts of plants, and their growth stages. She also showed them a video about the digestive system, which told the kids why the digestive system is important!

We then ended with eating the no bake cookies and a period of reflection!

Third Day! 7th Graders

Today was another very successful day! We started the day with going outside and giving the kids a tour of the garden. They were able to pick a few things and Aster talked about the importance of giving a plant everything it needs. After this Abbie helped the kids pick mulberries from the tree in the back of the property. Once they got inside the kids watched a few video clips about photosynthesis and how a plant works.  Aster then showed them the consequences of not allowing a plant to be in the sun, and  she also showed them a bin of decomposers that we've been collecting for about a year. The worms inside of the bin were very large and many of the kids were shocked about how much they were able to decompose!

After this the counselors took the kids outside for a game called Capture the Flag Dodge ball. It kept us very entertained for about an hour. The two teamss ended up tying so that no feelings were hurt!

The engineers from Major Tool & Machine came and did an egg drop with the kids! All of the kids successfully dropped their eggs without breaking them. Only one egg broke and it belonged too one of the engineers!

After the kids had a yummy lunch of taco casserole!

Then the nurses from Community Health taught the kids about the new "My Plate" which replaced the food pyramid this year. After explaining why the pyramid was changed, the nurses talked about the importance of being healthy and staying active!

Aster then took the kids out in the garden where they planted flowers in between many of the plants.

We ended the day with a brief reflection period.

Day 2

My favorite was soccer and the scavenger hunt. It was really hard to find most of the clues, I had a really fun time.

I liked when we went soccer and I like when we did the scavenger hunt.

My favorite thing today is picking berries. The funny thing about the day is when Duane
 made us play soccer.

It was fun and we did a lot of things today and I had fun.

Something I did today what was fun is play soccer. Something I want to do is play more outside activities.

One things I like about today was when we made a rocket on the computer for 3D modeling.

Today we played soccer out team lost. I still had fun.

Today I had fun playing soccer and I like when pick berries. I had fun today!

Today we played soccer and my team won and we picked up cherries, strawberries, and more berries and chick eggs.

Today was great cause we experience a whole lot of things and that's why I had a great time.

Second Day! 7th Grade

Our first stop today was the orchard! We went to pick mulberries, raspberries, and apples! We also got to track the progress of some of the other plants including grapes. The kids loved taking part of the farming! So much so that when we came back to the center they wanted to help plant corn and beans.

Next was SPARK, we played soccer outside, which helps improve hand eye coordination. It also helped build team work and endurance!

We then did a geocaching activity outside where we hid the answers to a worksheet around the yard, and they had to find them using the geocaching equipment. All of the questions involved important plant facts!

After working hard we all took a break and had some homemade popcorn that our counselor Abbie made. It was delicious and we all appreciated the break!

The engineers then came back and all the campers made personalized rocket ships, which will be printed on the 3D printer located at Major Tool & Machine! This exposure to the advanced equipment thrilled many of the campers! They are all really excited to visit the plant and receive their rockets!

For lunch we had sandwiches and salads! The lettuce for both came from the garden!

Next our director, Aster, taught the kids about sugar. She showed just how much sugar is in many of the processed foods that are on the market. She used sugar cubes to visualize how much sugar a consumer is putting into their body daily.

We wrapped up camp with a brief reflection period, as well as having the kids make homemade trail mix for themselves to eat during their reflection time.

7th Grade Reflection

Day 1

What I liked to do is the garden. What I liked was dodge ball.

One thing I like today was when we played dodge ball and played kick ball. I liked learning more about gardening and play games every morning.

The reason I like the eating is because i learn what is healthy for your body and we made fruit kabobs and the reason I liked the learning plants was was be we got to take pictures of something plant like things. I also liked when played games outside.

I learned about 3D printing. I really like our counselors!

I liked dodge ball.

Gardening is very fun but my favorite part was dodge ball. It was creative.

Today the garden's summer camp I had a fun time, my favorite part was everything. I loved this day and I hope to see what the journey brings.

What was my favorite thing that I did today was kick ball. I had fun here today!

I liked when we played dodge ball. The food was good.

What I like about the garden and the counselor is that you can do a lot of stuff learn new things.

I was with brother and my sister and we had fun and the fun thing is the name game.

Two things I liked to do was eating and playing dodge ball. I am hoping to do is more planting flowers.

7th Grade Photography

First Day! - 7th Graders

Today we welcomed the seventh graders to FHC! To start the day we played a few name games to get to know the kids! After, the kids learned about honey bees from Jeff Dittemore! They learned about the types of bees, how a bee colony grows, and how bees produce honey.

In photography the campers learned the basic principles of photography such as the Rule-of-Thirds. After learning the basics, the kids went outside to take pictures, which are posted above! They enjoyed seeing the garden from behind the lens, and this encouraged them to look for smaller aspects hidden  inside the garden.

After photography, the kids went outside for SPARK where they played kickball and dodge ball! By the end of the hour everyone was tired, but they all had fun!

Then the engineers from Major Tool & Machine came and did an introduction to 3-D modeling. They also showed models that the engineers have created in the past.

After the engineers we had a delicious lunch of spaghetti and garlic bread! Then Linda, our nutritionists came and taught the children the importance of eating all of the food groups everyday. For snack, she brought fruit kabobs!

Aster then taught the kids about what a plant needs to survive, and showed that some seeds can survive without soil. To prove this each camper was given a plastic bag, paper towel, a seed, and water. We created a similar environment to soil with the paper towel, and placed the seed within the folds of the paper towel and watered it. We then hung them on the window where they would have ample sunlight.

We ended the day with some quiet time for reflection!

Reflecting on the Week - 8th Graders

I loved making no-bake cookies, they were really good! I had fun and I learned more about plants and my blood pressure. I am very healthy. I liked making rockets.

Today I had a nice day. I made ice cream, ate hot dogs, and went to see the engineers. I would love to come again next year! I LOVE THE GARDEN!

I really enjoyed everything! So keep doing what your doing. I enjoyed the cooking. And everything else. Also my rocket is beautiful!

Today was the last day and we did a lot, we ate food, learned about different places, went on a tour, and met engineers.

Today was the most exciting day of the week. I enjoyed making ice cream, taking a tour at Major Tool & Machine, and having hamburgers/macaroni for lunch. Overall I enjoyed and had lots of fun this week!

My favorite thiungs this week was when the healthy women came, and when Ms.Aster taught us.

Fifth Day! 8th Graders

Today was a culture day for the 8th Graders! Lunch was next! We had hamburgers and hotdogs, along with Mac&Cheese and Salads. Right after Abbie showed the kids how to make homemade ice cream, and they each made their own bag!

Then, Idamarie did an activity about where our ancestors came from. She started off with asking where we were born, where are parents were born, and eventually where our oldest ancestors were from (if we knew). After she started talking about where her family came from, Puerto Rico. She talked about the natives, history, and some of the main food eaten there. She also talked about some of the traditions of the native people.

We ended  the day with reflection and the counselors said goodbye to the eighth graders! As sad as this moment is, we're excited to meet the seventh graders and begin next week!

Fourth Day of Camp! 8th Graders

IUPUI came today to go over the importance of soil! They spend about half of the day here and throughout their time they incorporated games, learning, and experiments! We started off with creating our own soil profiles (basic models of the soil layers)! With these samples we soon tested to see how much phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen were present! Unfortunately, one of our test was flawed so we didn't get correct phosphorus levels. But everything else worked extremely well!

After lunch Nurse Linda taught the campers basic first aid! Including taking blood pressure, heart rate, and how to clean wounds. They also made no bake cookies which were delicious!

Aster then showed the kids how you can put out a candle by combining vinegar and baking soda. The mixture creates carbon dioxide which suffocates the flame. Then she showed the campers what happens when leaves aren't exposed to sunlight. They slowly turn white and will eventually fall off without photosynthesis to give them energy to keep surviving.

We ended with reflection time and a few games! It was a great day!

Third Day of Camp! 8th Graders

Today we got to start the day with a trip to the nearby orchard! Everyone got to pick blueberries, mulberries, and raspberries! We came back to the Center slightly dyed blue and purple! The kids loved picking the berries, which were later put into delicious fruit smoothies.

After a quick cool down, the kids got to play a game that combined Frisbee and football! It's a great way for the campers to have fun and exercise!

Aster then went over how energy travels through organisms, and the importance of eating high energy foods. She showed us how the energy traveled through a series of food webs and energy pyramids! By doing this Aster showed why vegetables and fruits give us more energy than meat products.

Two nurses from Community Health came and reviewed the previous health lessons. After reviewing My Plate and the importance of all of the food groups, the nurses discussed what makes up a healthy breakfast and a healthy snack!

We ended the day on a fun note! We made hats out of newspaper and leftover craft supplies. This showed how the kids can have fun and recycle at the same time! The kids had a blast and enjoyed being creative!

Counselor Reflections- Week 1

Day 1

Today I taught three base principles of photography and allowed the kids to take pictures around the garden. They seemed to apply the principles and enjoyed taking pictures. the pictures are now uploaded on the FHC blog. I also assisted in the preparing the meal and snacks.

Today I spent time helping the kids understand many of the principles taught to them that they might not have understood right away. I enjoyed helping the kids as well as getting closer to many of them!

I really enjoyed the bee keeper coming and sharing with us about bees. I also enjoyed the display of bees showing. I enjoyed the physical activity of kickball. I also enjoyed the inside activities.

I loved meeting the kids and learning from the guest teachers! I wish some of the lessons were more interactive. I'm very excited about the coming summer!Today has been good so I'm excited for tomorrow!!

My favorite part was eating and every being together! I learned a lot about 3D printing and how it works! The day went better than I thought and it moved more quickly than I expected. I had much more to do and i felt very accomplished.

Best part of the day? the 3D printer. We didn't even get to print anything yet and it was still so cool. Spools of plastic melting and forming whatever you tell it to. I'd say this day was a success. but we'll see how much the kids can learn by the end of the week.

Day 2

I enjoyed all of the activities today! My favorite part was the tennis ball game.

8th Grade Reflections

Day 1

I am very excited for tomorrow, to see what we are going to do. Something I really didn't like was when we were learning about the worms. Something I liked was when we played kickball.

Today was ok for this being the first day. Some things we did today was be a photographer, learned about bees/honey bees, and 3D machines. What I liked the most about today is the 3D machine and how it works.Overall my day went very well but my favorite things so far was playing kickball.

The best part of the day is when we was playing kickball and plant science.

My favorite part of the day today was winning the kickball game! I learned that the queen bee live a complicated of giving birth to 3-5,000 babies and being killed by her followers if she keeps having drones. Today was great!

Day 2

What we did today was plant sweet potatoes and get dirty. What I liked was when we played with the tennis ball. What i didn't like was getting dirty.

Today I had a lot of fun. It was the best time!

Today was ok. We played outside, planted flowers, dug up roots, and learned about how many grams of sugar we need a day. But my favorite was about the grams and using sugar cubes, but today seemed better then yesterday.

Today I had fun with the 3D thing and I can't wait to see my real space ship!

Second Day of Camp! 8th Graders

We had a very busy day today! We started out with a couple of name games, to help the kids remember our names, and vice versa. It was fun to start the day with a small competition of who remembered everyone's names the best!

Then the campers got to help out in the garden! We harvested turnip greens and planted sweet potatoes with a few group of volunteers from Indianapolis.

After working hard we all took a break and had some homemade popcorn that our counselor Abbie made. It was delicious and we all appreciated the break!

The engineers then came back and all the campers made personalized rocket ships! They will be printed on the 3D printer located at Major Tool & Machine! This exposure to the advanced equipment thrilled many of the campers! They are all really excited to visit the plant and receive their rockets!

Before lunch Nurse Lina helped teach the importance of hand washing, and also showed everyone how to wash their hands properly.

For lunch we had sandwiches and salads! The lettuce for both came from the garden!

Next our director, Aster, taught about sugar and showed just how much sugar are in many of the processed foods that are on the market. She used sugar cubes to visualize how much sugar a consumer is putting into their body daily.

We wrapped up camp with a brief reflection period, as well as having the kids make homemade trail mix for themselves to eat during their reflection time.
