Today was a culture day for the 7th Graders! We wanted to emphasize the importance of where our families come from. We learned about the culture, history, and food of four separate countries. We started with Aster talking about Ethiopia. She was born and raised there, and moved to the United States when she was about to go to college. Although she's lived in the United States for almost 40 years now, she still remembers her heritage and goes back to Ethiopia as much as she can! She brought native clothing, instruments, and even an Ethiopian flyswatter! She also made a traditional Ethiopian meal with chicken and lentils. While the kids were skeptical at first they soon embraced the different food.
The campers got the opportunity to tour Major Tool & Machine, they were walked around most of the plant including where some of the parts were made! Our tour guide told us the importance of each part of the plant and what each of the part was created for. We also got to see another larger 3D printer that was printing off the rockets the kids had designed earlier this week.
After the tour, Jenna talked about France. She recently got back from a trip to Paris and Normandy with her school. After teaching the kids some basic french words, she went through some of her favorite parts of her trip as well as the food, monuments, and history of France. The kids enjoyed learning about the famous monuments/landmarks and thee lesson was ended with Nutella crepes!
Lunch was next! We had hamburgers and hotdogs, along with Mac&Cheese and Salads. Right after Abbie showed the kids how to make homemade ice cream, and they each made their own bag!
Abbie then talked about Mexico! She started teaching them some basic Spanish words and moved onto Mexican history, native food and traditions. She also played some of the most popular Spanish songs in Mexico! To give them a taste of Mexico Abbie made Sopapilla! They are like the Spanish version of elephant ears except with cinnamon instead of powdered sugar!
We ended the day with reflection and the counselors said goodbye to the seventh graders! We had a very successful week filled with learning, fun and food!
