Day 4- 5th and 6th Grade

Today was a very relaxed day at the center! We started the day with a long game of hangman, we used garden, plant and health terms!

After our game we harvested cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, Swiss chard and collard greens!

We then planted carrots, radishes, lettuce, and onions in our empty rows!

For lunch we had Mac & cheese, chicken tender and broccoli made by Nakiea!

Then we did an egg drop! The kids came up with awesome drop containers and no eggs broke!

We ended the day with more hangman!

5th Day- 5th and 6th Graders

Today was the last day of camp for the summer. While all of the counselors are sad that camp is over we decided to make the last day as fun-filled as possible!!

We started the day with another long game of hangman! This time we used words that had to do with what's happening around the world.

After this Jeff came and talked about bees! He brought bee suits so that the campers and counselors could see the bee hive up close.
After talking to Jeff the campers got the opportunity to tour Major Tool & Machine! The girls loved walking around the plant and seeing all the cool machines. They also received the rockets they had made earlier that week.

Then we had a delicious lunch! Nakiea made hot dogs, hamburgers, Mac & cheese, a vegetable sauté, peaches, grapes, and cherries! Aster also made Ethiopian food for everyone to try!

We ended the day with building bird houses for the girls to take home and making ice cream!

Day 3 - 5th and 6th Graders

Today the kids spent all morning with IUPUI.  The students collected data like soil PH, soil composition, soil temperature and a percolation test.  They tested the soil from the garden to test how healthy our soil was.  We found out we need to add more nitrogen to the soil to help our garden grow better.

Once the campers finished outside,  it was time for lunch.  On the menu today was taco casserole, salad, and mixed greens including kale, squash, collard greens, and Swiss chard.

Then, two dieticians came in to talk to the campers about leading a healthy lifestyle.  They went over "MyPlate" and then the kids played a trivia game.  The kids learned about the different types of fruits and vegetables and how many servings they should have of each food.  They even got a bowl, lunch bag, or sticker if they answered questions in the trivia game correctly!

After that the kids went back outside for more vertex dodgeball with the counselors!  Then, they tried a delicious fruit smoothie as their healthy snack for the day.   Finally, they did reflections.  It was another great day at the

Day 2- 5th and 6th Graders

Today, once the kids arrived at the Center, the campers and counselors walked to the nearby orchard.  Here the campers learned about the parts of a plant and how to tell when the fruit is ready to pick.  They picked apples, grapes, raspberries, and mulberries.

Next, the kids went back to the Center and in small groups learned how to harvest plants. They picked collard greens and kale! Then the campers also got to make lego aligator robots! They got to use a lego computer program to program the alligators to move the mouths and make noises.

For lunch everyone had sandwiches, chips, mixed greens, and lemonade. Nakiea made a delicious vegetable medley with the greens that the students picked from the garden earlier today!

We then taught the campers about insects! We went into the importance of insects and why plants need them! Jeff actually brought in hissing cockroaches to show the kids! After learning about the insects the kids had a chance to go into the garden and catch some of the bugs they learned about! Most kids caught rolly polly's and ants.

Finally, they had plant science with Aster.  They learned what the acronym PLANTS stood for ( Place, air, nutrients, thirsty, soil). Aster also taught them about the parts of the a plant.  They then watched a short video about how one seed can create a forest!

We ended the day with a brief reflection time!

Day 1 Reflection- 5th and 6th Graders

My favorite part if the day was the engineering and the bug catching!

My favorite part of the day was the cooking help.

The center is so much fun. My favorite part today was making shush kabob. It was so much fun. There was blueberries, apples, oranges and grapes. We also went in the garden and picked vegetables.I picked tomatoes and it was really fun. Later we got to cut them. Lastly a bug teacher came from Purdue to each us about bugs. Then we got to go outside and pick them. I had a worm and we got really attached but I gave him to the center for their worm habitat.

Day 1- 5th and 6th Graders

Today we welcomed the 5th and 6th graders to the Center! We started the day with a couple of name games! Soon after the name games the campers got to harvest squash, zucchini, Swiss chard, tomatoes, and collared greens in the garden!

We soon came inside, the kids then got to help Jenna and Nakiea in the kitchen! Due to the small amount of campers this week the girls were able cut vegetables and learn how to make a sauté! They seemed to really enjoy helping out in the kitchen!

Then the engineers from Major Tool & Machine came and introduced 3D printing! After a PowerPoint showing all the cool things you can make with the printer, the girls got to design their own rockets!

After engineering we had a delicious lunch of pasta with meat sauce, garlic bread and the vegetable sauté that the girls helped make!

Then we all made fruit kabobs! The kids got to pick what fruit they wanted and make patterns with the fruit! Right after Jenna went over the new My Plate!

Jeff from Purdue Extension then went over insects and bugs! He talked about the importance of each body part and what a body part does. He also talked about how bugs travel, and how they get their food! They ended with a bug scavenger where they got to use magnifying glasses and bug jars to get a close up of all the bugs caught!

We ended with a delicious snack of fruit kabobs and strawberry shortcake and a small reflection period!
