Day 5- 4th, 5th, 6th Graders

Today was a culture day! We wanted to emphasize the importance of where our families come from. We learned about the culture, history, and food of four separate countries. We started with Aster talking about Ethiopia. She was born and raised there, and moved to the United States when she was about to go to college. Although she's lived in the United States for almost 40 years now, she still remembers her heritage and goes back to Ethiopia as much as she can! She brought native clothing, instruments, and even an Ethiopian flyswatter! She also made a traditional Ethiopian meal with chicken and lentils. While the kids were skeptical at first they soon embraced the different food.

The campers got the opportunity to tour Major Tool & Machine, they were walked around most of the plant including where some of the parts were made! Our tour guide told us the importance of each part of the plant  and what each of the part was created for.

After the tour, Jenna talked about France. She recently got back from a trip to Paris and Normandy with her school. After teaching the kids some basic french words, she went through some of her favorite parts of her trip as well as the food, monuments, and history of France. The kids enjoyed learning about the famous monuments/landmarks and thee lesson was ended with Nutella crepes!

Lunch was next! We had hamburgers and hot dogs, along with Mac&Cheese and a vegetable sautee. Right after Jenna and Nakiea showed the kids how to make homemade ice cream, and they each made their own bag!

Alyssa then talked about Mexico! She started teaching them some basic Spanish words and moved onto Mexican history, native food and traditions. She also played some of the most popular Spanish songs in Mexico! They also learned how to salsa!

We ended  the day with reflection and the counselors said goodbye to this weeks campers! We had a very successful week filled with learning, fun and food!

Day 4- 4th, 5th, and 6th Graders

Today, we only had half of our campers.  So, the campers started out in the garden today with Aster.  They weeded some of the garden beds. Aster explained that to weed properly, they needed to pull the weeds out by the root so that they couldn't grow back.  The campers did a great job! In one of the beds, there are bean plants that grow upwards. So, the campers tied the plants to a stake to keep the beans growing straight.

After a snack and some water, the kids learned how to calculate their resting heart rate with Nurse Linda.  They each listened to their heartbeat for 30 seconds, took that number and doubled it.  This number is their resting heart rate and for these aged children it should be approximately between 60-90 beats per minute.  To burn calories, the ideal heart rate should be double their resting heart rate.  (If there are any heart problems then the target heart rate should NOT be double).   After a fun game of dodgeball, they took their heart rate again to see if they were close to their target heart rate.

Once the kids were done with the heart rate activity, they did a craft called "Parachute man".  There was pre-cut people for the kids to color and then they attached string to one of their people.  They then attached that to a plastic bag.  They tested their parachutes to see how well they worked.

Next it was lunch time! On the menu today was chicken tenders, macaroni, vegetables, and lemonade.

Then after lunch, the campers identified food groups by coloring a food page.  They played a game called "Blast Off".  They put in their name and age and the game calculates an appropriate amount of calories they should eat per day.  Then, the kids have to pick out food for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, and an activity to reach their nutrition goal.  They also must choose the correct balance of fruits, vegetables, protein, grains, and dairy.

Finally, they wrote their daily reflections and played a game of dodgeball!

Day 3- 4th, 5th, and 6th Graders

Today the kids spent all morning with IUPUI.  The students collected data like soil PH, soil composition, soil temperature and a percolation test.  They tested the soil from the garden to test how healthy our soil was.  We found out we need to add more nitrogen to the soil to help our garden grow better.

After time with the IUPUI teachers, the kids played their favorite game, dodgeball.  This time they played vertex dodgeball where the boundary line that divided the two teams can move!

Once the campers finished outside,  it was time for lunch.  On the menu today was taco casserole, salad, and mixed greens including kale, squash, collard greens, and Swiss chard.

Then, two dieticians came in to talk to the campers about leading a healthy lifestyle.  They went over "MyPlate" and then the kids played a trivia game.  The kids learned about the different types of fruits and vegetables and how many servings they should have of each food.  They even got a bowl, lunch bag, or sticker if they answered questions in the trivia game correctly!

After that the kids went back outside for more vertex dodgeball with the counselors!  Then, they tried a delicious fruit smoothie as their healthy snack for the day.   Finally, they did reflections.  It was another great day at the Center!

Today, once the kids arrived at the Center, the campers and counselors walked to the nearby orchard.  Here the campers learned about the parts of a plant and how to tell when the fruit is ready to pick.  They picked apples, grapes, raspberries, and mulberries.

Next, the kids went back to the Center and in small groups learned how to harvest plants. They picked collard greens and kale!  After weighing all the food, the kids and counselors picked 35 pounds of collard greens, kale, and Swiss chard!  This food will be delivered to the seniors of the Edna Martin Center.

After a quick break inside, the kids played circle dodgeball. They enjoyed having time to run outside and play!

The engineers came back today and they switched groups.  The group that did the egg drop now are working with lego robots and vice versa.  The campers enjoyed trying new activities and experimenting!

For lunch everyone had sandwiches, chips, mixed greens, and lemonade.   Nakiea made a delicious vegetable medley with the greens that the students picked from the garden earlier today!

After lunch it was off to a scavenger hunt! The kids were looking for cards that were hidden around the garden.  These cards had answers to a worksheet they received.  They learned all about butterflies including how long they lived, what they ate, and more!

Finally, they had plant science with Aster.  They learned what the acronym PLANTS stood for ( Place, air, nutrients, thirsty, soil).  They then watched a short video about how one seed can create a forest! They sang the "one seed" song at the end.  After plant science the students played their favorite game, dodgeball!
