Today was a very relaxed day at the center! We started the day with a long game of hangman, we used garden, plant and health terms!

After our game we harvested cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, Swiss chard and collard greens!

We then planted carrots, radishes, lettuce, and onions in our empty rows!

For lunch we had Mac & cheese, chicken tender and broccoli made by Nakiea!

Then we did an egg drop! The kids came up with awesome drop containers and no eggs broke!

We ended the day with more hangman!

5th Day- 5th and 6th Graders

Today was the last day of camp for the summer. While all of the counselors are sad that camp is over we decided to make the last day as fun-filled as possible!!

We started the day with another long game of hangman! This time we used words that had to do with what's happening around the world.

After this Jeff came and talked about bees! He brought bee suits so that the campers and counselors could see the bee hive up close.
After talking to Jeff the campers got the opportunity to tour Major Tool & Machine! The girls loved walking around the plant and seeing all the cool machines. They also received the rockets they had made earlier that week.

Then we had a delicious lunch! Nakiea made hot dogs, hamburgers, Mac & cheese, a vegetable sauté, peaches, grapes, and cherries! Aster also made Ethiopian food for everyone to try!

We ended the day with building bird houses for the girls to take home and making ice cream!

Day 3 - 5th and 6th Graders

Today the kids spent all morning with IUPUI.  The students collected data like soil PH, soil composition, soil temperature and a percolation test.  They tested the soil from the garden to test how healthy our soil was.  We found out we need to add more nitrogen to the soil to help our garden grow better.

Once the campers finished outside,  it was time for lunch.  On the menu today was taco casserole, salad, and mixed greens including kale, squash, collard greens, and Swiss chard.

Then, two dieticians came in to talk to the campers about leading a healthy lifestyle.  They went over "MyPlate" and then the kids played a trivia game.  The kids learned about the different types of fruits and vegetables and how many servings they should have of each food.  They even got a bowl, lunch bag, or sticker if they answered questions in the trivia game correctly!

After that the kids went back outside for more vertex dodgeball with the counselors!  Then, they tried a delicious fruit smoothie as their healthy snack for the day.   Finally, they did reflections.  It was another great day at the

Day 5- 4th, 5th, 6th Graders

Today was a culture day! We wanted to emphasize the importance of where our families come from. We learned about the culture, history, and food of four separate countries. We started with Aster talking about Ethiopia. She was born and raised there, and moved to the United States when she was about to go to college. Although she's lived in the United States for almost 40 years now, she still remembers her heritage and goes back to Ethiopia as much as she can! She brought native clothing, instruments, and even an Ethiopian flyswatter! She also made a traditional Ethiopian meal with chicken and lentils. While the kids were skeptical at first they soon embraced the different food.

The campers got the opportunity to tour Major Tool & Machine, they were walked around most of the plant including where some of the parts were made! Our tour guide told us the importance of each part of the plant  and what each of the part was created for.

After the tour, Jenna talked about France. She recently got back from a trip to Paris and Normandy with her school. After teaching the kids some basic french words, she went through some of her favorite parts of her trip as well as the food, monuments, and history of France. The kids enjoyed learning about the famous monuments/landmarks and thee lesson was ended with Nutella crepes!

Lunch was next! We had hamburgers and hot dogs, along with Mac&Cheese and a vegetable sautee. Right after Jenna and Nakiea showed the kids how to make homemade ice cream, and they each made their own bag!

Day 4- 4th, 5th, and 6th Graders

Today, we only had half of our campers.  So, the campers started out in the garden today with Aster.  They weeded some of the garden beds. Aster explained that to weed properly, they needed to pull the weeds out by the root so that they couldn't grow back.  The campers did a great job! In one of the beds, there are bean plants that grow upwards. So, the campers tied the plants to a stake to keep the beans growing straight.

After a snack and some water, the kids learned how to calculate their resting heart rate with Nurse Linda.  They each listened to their heartbeat for 30 seconds, took that number and doubled it.  This number is their resting heart rate and for these aged children it should be approximately between 60-90 beats per minute.  To burn calories, the ideal heart rate should be double their resting heart rate.  (If there are any heart problems then the target heart rate should NOT be double).   After a fun game of dodgeball, they took their heart rate again to see if they were close to their target heart rate.

Once the kids were done with the heart rate activity, they did a craft called "Parachute man".  There was pre-cut people for the kids to color and then they attached string to one of their people.  They then attached that to a plastic bag.  They tested their parachutes to see how well they worked.

Next it was lunch time! On the menu today was chicken tenders, macaroni, vegetables, and lemonade.

Then after lunch, the campers identified food groups by coloring a food page.  They played a game called "Blast Off".  They put in their name and age and the game calculates an appropriate amount of calories they should eat per day.  Then, the kids have to pick out food for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, and an activity to reach their nutrition goal.  They also must choose the correct balance of fruits, vegetables, protein, grains, and dairy.

Finally, they wrote their daily reflections and played a game of dodgeball!

Today at Felege Hiywot IUPUI taught a wonderful group of 7, 8 and 9 year olds about ecosystem studies. They introduced the concept of a food web through instruction and observation.

The students participated in a reading of Jump, Frog, Jump! and brainstormed what familiar organisms might eat to survive.  Then they used binoculars and magnifying bug catchers to observe the different life forms inhabiting Felege Hiywot.  They compiled their data by drawing pictures of their discoveries on large pads of paper.  Then we discussed the concepts of producers, consumers, herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores, and how all of these categories exist together in ecosystems.  The campers drew arrows between the organisms and their food, creating food webs that showed the interconnectedness and complexity of ecosystems.

Everyone had a fun morning and come away with a new understanding of how important all organisms are to the greater whole.

Next we played outside for about an hour! We all played dodge ball, soccer, catch, and freeze tag!
