Today at Felege Hiywot we taught a wonderful group of 4, 5 and 6 year olds about ecosystem studies. We introduced the concept of a food web through instruction and observation.
The students participated in a reading of Jump, Frog, Jump! and brainstormed what familiar organisms might eat to survive. Then they used binoculars and magnifying bug catchers to observe the different life forms inhabiting Felege Hiywot. They compiled their data by drawing pictures of their discoveries on large pads of paper. Then we discussed the concepts of producers, consumers, herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores, and how all of these categories exist together in ecosystems. The campers drew arrows between the organisms and their food, creating food webs that showed the interconnectedness and complexity of ecosystems.
Everyone had a fun morning and come away with a new understanding of how important all organisms are to the greater whole.
The rest of the day was filled with many games and activities! We played dodge ball, duck duck goose, and kickball! Many of the kids also played soccer towards the end of the day!
For lunch we had chicken tenders, mac & cheese, and salad! After lunch we made homemade ice cream and ate cookies that our counselor, Jenna, brought us!
It was a very fun last day with the Pre K- K kids! We hope everyone has a good four day weekend and has a great July 4th!
