IUPUI came today to go over the importance of soil! They spend about half of the day here and throughout their time the incorporated games, learning, and experiments! We started off with creating our own soil profiles (models of the layers in soil)! This showed how every area of soil can be different depending on it's bedrock, climate, and proximity to water. After going over the levels we planted flowers into our profiles so that we can take them home and examine how roots effect each soil level. After this we collected cores from the soil surrounding the center and discovered how thick the top layer of soil was! With these samples we soon tested to see how much phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen was in the soil! We got to finish color charts that helped us determine what kind of soil surrounded the Center! The campers learned about the experimental process as well as learned how to work handheld soil testing mechanisms which showed us the moisture content, pH, and temperature.
For lunch we had chicken tenders, mac & cheese and salad!
After lunch Nurse Kathy taught the campers basic first aid! Including taking blood pressure, heart rate, and how to clean wounds. They also made no bake cookies!
Next Abbie put the kids through a difficult obstacle course where they had to do things like jump through hula-hoops, do a baseball bat spin, bean bag throw, jumping jacks and hurdles! Though sometimes difficult many of the kids found finishing the course very rewarding.
Then Aster taught the kids about the parts of plants, and their growth stages. She also showed them a video about the digestive system, which told the kids why the digestive system is important!
We then ended with eating the no bake cookies and a period of reflection!
